Holly Springs Intermediate School

Public Grades 4-6
Summary

Holly Springs Intermediate School is a grades 4–6 school in Holly Springs, MS, serving 228 students in the Holly Springs School District. The school sits between elementary schooling and Holly Springs Junior High School (grades 7–8), which is located less than a mile away. It serves a very high-poverty student population: 100% of students qualified for free/reduced lunch in 2023–2024, and 97.4% did so in 2024–2025. Academically, the school generally trails Mississippi state averages, but there is a clear bright spot in 6th-grade math. In 2024–2025, 57.4% of 6th graders were proficient in math, compared to 52.9% statewide—a massive 23-point advantage over nearby Byhalia Middle School, where only 23.8% were proficient. Science is also improving rapidly, with 5th-grade proficiency jumping from 34.5% in 2023–2024 to 61.9% in 2025–2026, beating Byhalia's 53.7%.

Chronic absenteeism remains a challenge, though the trend is moving in the right direction. The school's rate improved from 31.7% in 2022–2023 to 27.3% in 2023–2024—better than the district average of 34.9% and comparable to Byhalia Middle School (26.2%), though still higher than the state's 23.9%. The student-teacher ratio has risen to 17.6, higher than both Holly Springs Junior High (12.9) and Byhalia (16.1), which may mean less individualized attention for students.

While 6th-grade math is a genuine strength, 4th- and 5th-grade math lag well behind state averages, and 6th-grade English Language Arts has been volatile—though it jumped to 39.7% proficiency in 2025–2026 from 22.9% the prior year. Encouragingly, Holly Springs Intermediate outperformed Byhalia in 6th-grade ELA, 6th-grade math, 5th-grade math, and 5th-grade science in 2025–2026, despite serving a similarly high-poverty population. The school's upward trajectory, combined with the recent improvement at Holly Springs Junior High, suggests students may be arriving at the next level with stronger foundational skills than in past years.
