Summary

George County Middle School, located in Lucedale, MS, serves 618 students in grades 7 and 8 as part of the George County School District, a 4-star district ranked 27th out of 134 in Mississippi. Over the past five years, however, this school has slipped from a 4-star rating (76th percentile in 2020-2021) to a 2-star rating (45th percentile in 2025-2026), making it the lowest-ranked of three nearby middle schools. For comparison, East Central Middle School ranks 12th in the state, while Leakesville Junior High ranks 94th — both outperform George County in most subjects.

The most striking concern is chronic absenteeism, which has more than doubled from 17.6% in 2018-2019 to 38.2% in 2023-2024. That rate is well above the state average of 23.9%, higher than Jackson County School District’s East Central Middle School at 22.7%, and nearly double Leakesville Junior High’s 19.2%. Test scores have also fallen sharply: between 2023-2024 and 2025-2026, 8th grade math proficiency dropped 19 points to 37.4%, while 7th and 8th grade ELA proficiency now sit well below both the state and nearby schools. The one bright spot is 8th grade science, where 64.8% of students are proficient — above the state average and on par with Leakesville.

Given that Leakesville Junior High serves a student body with a far higher free/reduced lunch rate (99% vs. 67% at George County) and larger class sizes, poverty alone does not explain the gap. Staffing levels are similar to East Central’s, so attendance, school climate, and instructional quality likely play larger roles. For parents, the data point to a school that was recently strong but is now struggling with a familiar set of challenges. Getting kids to school every day and strengthening academic supports in ELA and math will be essential to reversing the trend and restoring George County Middle School’s standing.
