Seminary Middle is a 5–8 middle school in Seminary, Mississippi, serving 365 students within the Covington County School District, a mid-pack district ranking 68th out of 134 districts in the state. The school has shown meaningful improvement in recent years, climbing from the 39–46th percentile range in 2016–2021 to the 61st–70th percentile range from 2023–2025, with a 4-star performance in 2024–2025 and a 3-star rating in the most recent 2025–2026 school year (90th of 260 Mississippi middle schools, 65th percentile).

What really stands out about Seminary Middle is its “strong start, fading finish” pattern. Fifth and sixth graders perform at or above state levels, and sometimes compete with far wealthier neighboring schools. In 2025–2026, 5th-grade math proficiency was 71.5% (vs. 49.6% statewide), 5th-grade science was 88.6% (vs. 71.5%), and 6th-grade math was 67.0% (vs. 52.7% statewide). But performance drops sharply by 8th grade: math proficiency falls to 37.7% (vs. 51.4% statewide) and ELA to 33.4% (vs. 40.9% statewide). This happens despite the fact that nearly all students — 99–100% — qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, while nearby Oak Grove Middle (61%) and Sumrall Middle (40%) — both in the higher-ranked Lamar County School District — serve far fewer economically disadvantaged students. The school outperforms its own district in nearly every subject and grade, making its early-grade results especially impressive.

The most urgent warning sign is chronic absenteeism. At 36.0% in 2023–2024 (vs. 23.9% statewide), more than one in three Seminary Middle students is chronically absent — roughly double the rates at Oak Grove Middle (17.9%) and Sumrall Middle (20.3%). Attendance has steadily worsened since 2018–2019, and it's a likely driver of the 8th-grade decline. Additionally, the school does not report Algebra I End-of-Course results, unlike both nearby schools, suggesting 8th graders may not have the same access to advanced math coursework. If attendance improves and early-grade success is replicated in later grades, Seminary Middle has strong potential to sustain its recent upward trajectory.
