Sterling Elementary faces several challenges, including high chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 14.0% to 21.2% over the past few years, significantly higher than the state average and the rates of nearby schools like Martin Warren Elementary (20.6%) and Ridge View Elementary (20.6%). The school's test scores in Mathematics and English Language Arts are generally below the state and district averages, with only 37.9% of 3rd graders proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 39.9% for the Warrensburg R-VI district and 41.4% statewide.

While Sterling Elementary has a higher per-student spending amount compared to the state and district averages, ranging from $8,674 to $10,995 per student, the school also has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 30.08% to 38.92% over the past few years. This suggests the school may be serving a more economically disadvantaged student population, which could be a contributing factor to the school's lower academic performance when compared to nearby schools like Martin Warren Elementary and Ridge View Elementary.

Open Quote Nurse CC here is wonderful, as are the lunch ladies, and Sheila at the front desk. The librarian is a friendly, warm person. These people are the only reason I give sterling any stars at all.
My concerns are regarding my child's safety, and this school's accountability. Transportation through Apple Bus is a nightmare, and some folks in this building only add to that problem. For example, my child was forced off the bus at the wrong stop, and the counselor here at Sterling told me that QUOTE "You should expect that from time to time". No. I should not. My 9-yr old child should have been listened to, you might have found your error if you had. They acknowledged that it was indeed their error, they just didn't care.
The principal dodges phone calls. The superintendent is not worth the paper his job title is printed on. This is obviously a small-town school where everybody gets hired regardless of quality. Close Quote
