Summary

West Middle is a public middle school located in Hazelwood, Missouri, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 756 students. The school is part of the Hazelwood School District, which is ranked 319 out of 367 districts in Missouri and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

West Middle has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Missouri middle schools over the past several years, with a ranking between 318-494 out of 459-587 schools. The school's performance has been relatively stagnant, with a 1-2 star rating from SchoolDigger throughout the review period. West Middle faces significant challenges, including high chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 36.3% to 42.3%, which are significantly higher than the state average and the rates of nearby schools like Northwest Middle (38.2%) and the Ferguson-Florissant district schools (38.7%). Academically, West Middle's performance, as measured by MAP test proficiency rates, is significantly below the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas.

While West Middle's performance is generally lower than the state and district averages, it is not the lowest-performing school in the immediate area. Schools like Ferguson Middle, Johnson Wabash 6th Grade Center, and Cross Keys Middle in the Ferguson-Florissant district have even lower academic proficiency rates and higher chronic absenteeism. This suggests that the challenges facing West Middle may be more systemic to the broader Hazelwood and Ferguson-Florissant school districts, rather than unique to the school itself. However, the relatively stronger performance of certain student subgroups and the presence of a high-performing school like Steam Academy Middle School in the district provide potential avenues for improvement and learning.

Open Quote The staff lies just as bad as the children, and we are supposed to be teaching our children not to lie. The staff is not aware of policies and procedures and provide the incorrect information to parents. There is no control over the school there are fights every other week. Close Quote
