Summary

Newport Elementary is a PK–5 public school in Newport, Minnesota (Washington County) serving 264 students as part of South Washington County Schools — the smallest traditional elementary in its immediate peer group, where neighboring schools enroll 420 to 692 students. It currently ranks 407th of 869 Minnesota elementary schools (53rd percentile, 3 stars). That marks a genuine step up from 2015–16 through 2018–19, when the school sat in the 35th–42nd percentile with 2 stars every year. Since 2020–21 it has held in the low-to-mid 50s (53 → 51 → 53), so the improvement is real but has plateaued rather than kept climbing.

Math and science are the school's strengths. In 2025–26, 53.2% of students were proficient in math, above the district's 51.6% and the state's 44.9%, and science proficiency of 37.8% was the highest of any school in the local comparison set — about 12 points above the state average. Newport also has the smallest student–teacher ratio of any traditional public peer at 9.5 students per teacher, improved from 10.4 three years ago, while serving the highest-poverty population in its district group (54.55% free/reduced lunch, down from nearly 62%).
