Summary

St. Charles Elementary is a PK–6 school serving 457 students in the small southeastern Minnesota community of Saint Charles, part of the St. Charles Public School District, which ranks 89th of 458 Minnesota districts (81st percentile, 4 stars). The school itself ranked 307th of 869 elementary schools in 2025–26, placing it in the 65th percentile with 3 stars. That is a step down from the late 2010s, when it was a 4-star school in the low 70s percentile; since 2020–21 it has generally sat in the low-to-mid 60s, with a brief rebound to the 69th percentile in 2024–25.

Academically, the school is above the state average in math (51.1% vs. 44.9%) and reading (57.8% vs. 48.6%), but below the state in science (21.2% vs. 25.5%) and below its own district's 31.7%. Grade-level results vary widely. Third grade math (72.6%), fourth grade math (64.6%), fourth grade reading (61.5%), and sixth grade reading (65.7%) are all well above state averages — clear strengths. Fifth grade math is the standout weak spot at 30.6%, more than 11 points below the state, and science proficiency has fallen sharply from 53.03% in 2022–23 and 2023–24 to 27.54% in 2024–25 and 21.2% in 2025–26. Because science is tested only in fifth grade, this points to a specific grade-level or curriculum concern.

Compared with nearby schools, St. Charles sits mid-pack. Lewiston-Altura Elementary (92nd percentile, 5 stars), Chatfield Elementary School (88th), and Dover-Eyota Elementary (70th) post higher math and reading results, while Lanesboro Elementary and Plainview-Elgin-Millville 4-5 rank close behind at the 63rd percentile. Longfellow Elementary School (45th), Rollingstone Community School (41st), and Pinewood Elementary School (18th) trail it. The school's free/reduced lunch rate of 28.88% is lower than several schools that outperform it, so poverty alone doesn't explain the gap. Results for low-income students (62nd percentile) are close to the school's overall rank, a positive sign, though results for some other subgroups have been uneven from year to year and are worth watching.
