Summary

Red Lake Elementary in Redlake, MN is the main elementary campus of the Red Lake Public School District, serving 526 students in grades 1–5 within the Red Lake Nation in Beltrami County, and it is by far the largest school in its immediate area. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students attend Red Lake Early Childhood Center next door, which means Red Lake Elementary is the academic entry point for nearly every child in the community. It ranks 847th out of 869 ranked Minnesota schools (3rd percentile) with a zero-star rating, and about 81% of its students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

The results are low, but they are moving in the right direction. Test scores have risen for three straight years, with reading nearly doubling from 7.14% to 15.50%; math reached 7.50% and science 4.70%, against state averages of 44.9%, 48.6%, and 25.5%. Reading is clearly the strongest subject, and 5th grade reading (21.7%) is the highest proficiency figure reported anywhere at the school. Math, by contrast, fades as students move up: 15.2% in 3rd grade, 6.0% in 4th, and just 1.9% in 5th. Within its own district, Red Lake Elementary outperforms Ponemah Elementary in all three subjects, and it also beats Endazhi-Nitaawiging, a nearby charter school serving a similarly high-poverty population.

The biggest gaps appear against Schoolcraft Learning Community, a charter school in Bemidji where math proficiency (29%) and reading proficiency (44.3%) are far higher — but that school's free/reduced lunch rate is 38%, less than half of Red Lake Elementary's, so it is not a like-for-like comparison. Poverty at Red Lake Elementary has fallen from about 90% to 81% over two years, while the student–teacher ratio has loosened from 10.4:1 to 12.5:1. Parents should know this is a high-need school near the bottom of state rankings that is nonetheless the strongest performer in its district and is showing its first sustained improvement in a decade.
