MPS Online 6-12

MPS Online 6-12 is a full-time online school in the Minneapolis Public School District serving 358 students in grades 6–12 from a site on West Broadway Avenue in North Minneapolis, where 71.5% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024-25 — the lowest poverty rate among the nearby schools it is most often compared with. It is also the second-largest school in that peer group, behind only North High.

On state tests, MPS Online outperforms North High, the large comprehensive high school less than half a mile away, in all three subjects: math 9.4% vs 3.3%, reading 15.8% vs 12.4%, and science 6.7% vs 4.9%. But it trails the district by 27.7 points in math, 26.0 in reading, and 15.0 in science, and the gaps against the state are wider still. Banaadir Academy, the only other school in this group serving grades 6–12, beats it in every subject — including a 22-point reading gap — despite a 96% low-income rate. MPS Online's 56.1% graduation rate lands between the comprehensive high schools and the smaller alternative programs, while its 13.8% dropout rate is more than double the district's.

Inside the school, the weakest results sit in the middle grades: 11th-grade math proficiency is 27.3%, close to the district's 28%, but grade 7 is 0% and grade 8 is 3.8%. Reading and science have slid in recent years even as math edged up, and low-income students — roughly seven in ten here — rank 372 of 389 (4th percentile, 0 stars) among similar students statewide. Graduation is the clearest bright spot, rising 47.2% to 50.0% to 56.1% over three years. With about 50 students per grade, small cohorts make single-year figures unreliable; read the trends rather than point estimates, and treat state-suppressed values as unknown.
