In 2025–2026 it ranked 8th of 473 Minnesota high schools — the top 2% of the state, with 5 stars — while its district ranked 6th of 458 districts statewide.

Test scores back that up. In 2025–2026, 73.5% of students met proficiency in math, 68.3% in reading and 59.2% in science, compared with state rates of 44.9%, 48.6% and 25.5%. Hancock beats every traditional nearby high school in all three subjects, including Morris Area Secondary (63.5% math, 57.8% reading, 41.6% science), Minnewaska Secondary (45.3% math, 51.1% reading, 54.2% science), Benson Secondary and Chokio-Alberta Secondary. The lead appears at every tested grade level, with the sharpest gaps in 11th-grade math (71.0%) and 8th-grade science (50.0%).

The improvement has been steady rather than a one-year fluke: Hancock sat at the 62nd percentile in 2022–2023, then the 99th, 97th and 98th percentiles in the three years since, and all-grades reading proficiency roughly doubled over four years. Hancock has also posted five straight years of 0.0% dropout, while its 93.5% graduation rate trails Morris (98.9%), Benson (97.5%), Minnewaska (95.0%) and Chokio-Alberta (100%) — though with roughly 34 students per grade, one student moves that figure by about 2.5 points. The school achieves these results with a 12.6:1 student–teacher ratio, leaner staffing than Morris or Minnewaska, and 22.06% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Note that Heartland Girls Ranch and Benson Area Learning Center serve specialized residential and alternative populations, so they are not meaningful academic comparisons.
