Blue Earth Area Secondary is the only high school in the Blue Earth Area School District in Minnesota, serving grades 8–12 to 378 students in Blue Earth. About 50% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and the student-teacher ratio is 17.5. Because it is the district's sole high school, there is no within-district peer comparison — the district's graduation and dropout figures are identical to the school's.
The school's strongest story is its upward trajectory. Its state ranking rose from 247 of 480 (49th percentile, 2 stars) in 2023–24, to 170 of 450 (62nd percentile, 3 stars) in 2024–25, to 141 of 473 (70th percentile, 4 stars) in 2025–26. That current standing is higher than the district's overall rank of 220 of 458 (52nd percentile, 3 stars), though the pools differ. Outcomes are also strong: a 93.3% graduation rate versus the state's 84.9%, and a 1.3% dropout rate versus the state's 4.2%. Science is the academic bright spot, with End of Course proficiency at 55.4% against the state's 35%, and all-grade science at 35.9%, above both the district (28.9%) and the state (25.5%).
Math and reading lag behind. In 2025–26, all-grade math was 34.6% versus the state's 44.9%, and reading was 40.7% versus 48.6%; grade-level results in 11th, 10th, and 8th grades also trail the state. Year over year, math improved (30.33% to 34.6%) and science improved sharply (24.62% to 35.9%), but reading declined (45.74% to 40.7%), moving from slightly above the district to below it. The science strength is also uneven: End of Course results are excellent, while 8th grade science is 15.5%, slightly below the state's 16.7%.
