Summary

Holden Elementary School in Sterling Heights, MI, is a mid-sized PK-6 school within the Warren Consolidated Schools district, serving 341 students in a predominantly low-income area, with over 83% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, Holden faces significant challenges, ranking in the bottom half of Michigan elementary schools with a current 1-star rating. The most striking finding is the stark contrast with nearby Troy School District schools like Wass Elementary and Costello Elementary, located just a mile or two away. These schools consistently rank in the 90th+ percentile, with proficiency rates often double or triple Holden's. For example, in 5th-grade math, Holden's proficiency was 20.3%, while Wass and Costello achieved 64.3% and 70.1%, respectively. This academic gap mirrors a socio-economic divide—Troy schools have free/reduced lunch rates below 18%, compared to Holden's 83%. Notably, Holden spends over $22,000 per student, significantly more than the high-performing Troy schools (ranging from $15,000–$18,000) and even its district peers like Harwood Elementary ($14,937), yet this higher spending has not translated into higher test scores.

Performance at Holden is inconsistent across grades and subjects. A bright spot emerged in 4th-grade ELA, where proficiency reached 50% in 2023-2024—above the state average—though this success was not sustained. Math remains a persistent weakness, especially in upper grades. Subgroup data reveals concerning trends, including a dramatic decline for male students (from the 41st to 13th percentile) and critically low performance for White students (3rd percentile). However, the school showed relative strength in supporting its low-income students in prior years, ranking in the 52nd–58th percentile, though this slipped recently. On a positive note, chronic absenteeism at 19.2% is significantly better than the district average of 34.4%, suggesting attendance is a foundation the school can build upon.

Open Quote We moved to this neighborhood last year and this is the second year that my daughter is in this school. The first year there were problems with one girl that caused a problem for the whole 4th grade class. We thought that the problem was resolved last year, but it continues on in 5th grade.

If you are not of Arabic descent, then stay away from this school. They have a tendency to favor people of Arabic descent. My daughter was blamed for most of the stuff that went on and, yes some of it was her fault, but the majority of it was not.

I have no problem with people of different ethnicity, but for an American school to cater to one particular ethnicity is completely wrong. I can understand that some students need help, but what they do is ridiculous. Close Quote
