Summary

Tonda Elementary School in Canton, MI, is a consistently high-performing school within the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools district, serving 476 students in grades PK through 5.

Tonda stands out for its exceptional math instruction. In the most recent school year, 70.6% of 3rd graders and 65.9% of 4th graders were proficient in math—well above district averages (58.6% and 56.9%) and far exceeding state averages (42.9% and 39.4%). The school also shines in 5th-grade social studies, where 55.7% of students are proficient, more than double the state average. Another major strength is attendance: Tonda's chronic absenteeism rate is just 8.2%, less than half the district rate (19.3%) and roughly a third of the state rate (27.9%). This strong attendance likely contributes to academic success, a pattern visible when comparing nearby schools. For example, Isbister Elementary School (1.6 miles away) also has low absenteeism (7.2%) and top-tier test scores, while Hulsing Elementary School (1.9 miles away) has a 24.8% absenteeism rate and significantly lower performance. Tonda also demonstrates outstanding support for students with special needs and those from low socio-economic backgrounds, ranking in the 96th and 97th percentiles statewide for effectiveness with these groups.

While Tonda has a stellar track record—ranking in the top 12% of Michigan elementary schools for over a decade—its most recent ranking (172nd) is a slight step back from its peak in 2022-2024, when it placed in the top 8%. For example, 3rd-grade ELA proficiency dropped from 75.4% in 2023-2024 to 52.9% recently. This dip may be a temporary fluctuation, but it's worth watching. Compared to nearby peers, Tonda and Isbister are both top-tier, while Miller Elementary School and Hulsing struggle more, despite similar district resources. This disparity highlights how school-level factors like leadership and family engagement can make a big difference. For parents, Tonda offers a strong academic foundation, particularly in math, with a supportive environment that keeps kids in class and helps diverse learners thrive.

Open Quote My oldest is in Kindergarten so the whole school "thing" is new to me. The staff and parents at Tonda have made the transition for both my daughter and myself. The Kids Time program is also great. As a working mom having to leave my child not only in child care but in a whole new program was a little unnerving. The staff for Kids Time is wonderful. My daughter loves kids time and gets upset when if there are days she doesn't go. Close Quote
