Pickford Public Schools

Pickford Public Schools is a small, rural K-12 district in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula serving 430 students, where nearly half of families qualify for free or reduced lunch. This school stands out for an impressive paradox: it graduates students at a rate that far exceeds the state average, yet its students struggle to meet state proficiency benchmarks in core subjects like math and reading.

The most striking strength is graduation. In the most recent school year, 91.8% of Pickford seniors graduated—well above the state’s 84.0% and better than nearby Brimley Area School, Rudyard Area Schools, and Cedarville School. Its dropout rate (5.4%) is also lower than the state average and dramatically better than Rudyard (10.8%) or Cedarville (15.0%). However, academic proficiency tells a different story. For example, only about 13% of 5th and 6th graders were proficient in math, compared to state averages above 31%. Even 11th graders showed just 13.5% proficiency on SAT math, despite the high graduation rate. This suggests the district may prioritize keeping students on track to graduate over ensuring deep academic mastery.

There are bright spots. Pickford shows relative strength in English Language Arts, especially in upper grades—8th graders hit 80% proficiency on PSAT ELA, well above the state’s 64.8%. Chronic absenteeism, which spiked to 43.3% two years ago, has dropped to 25.5%, a positive sign that could lead to future academic gains. Still, the contrast with Cedarville School, just 11 miles away, is notable: Cedarville outperforms Pickford in nearly every subject while spending about $4,600 more per student. Pickford achieves its strong graduation outcomes with less funding ($16,892 per pupil) than any neighboring district, making its commitment to student completion clear—even as it works to close the proficiency gap.
