Pellston MiddleHigh School is a small, combined middle and high school serving 258 students in grades 6-12 in the rural community of Pellston, MI, part of the Pellston Public Schools district.

While Pellston offers a notably personalized learning environment with a low student-to-teacher ratio of 11.7—better than nearby Petoskey High School (17.3) and Harbor Springs High School (14.2)—this advantage is not translating into strong outcomes. The most pressing concern is a graduation crisis: the rate has fallen sharply from 85.7% in 2022-2023 to just 64.8% in 2024-2025, far below the state average of 84.0% and dramatically lower than nearby schools like Petoskey (96.7%), Cheboygan Area High School (94.6%), and Harbor Springs (91.6%). The school's most consistent weakness is Social Studies, where only 23.5% of 11th graders and 32.3% of 8th graders are proficient, compared to state averages of 43.2% and 50.3%. On a positive note, Pellston demonstrates a unique strength in serving its economically disadvantaged students, who rank in the 55th percentile statewide—higher than the school's overall rank. Despite spending over $17,000 per pupil, the school's small class sizes and resources are not currently reversing the troubling downward trend in graduation rates, making this a critical moment for the district to investigate and address the underlying causes.
