Summary

Richardson Elementary School in Oscoda, MI, serves approximately 711 students from Pre-K through 6th grade as part of the Oscoda Area Schools district, located in a rural area along the Lake Huron shoreline. The school serves a predominantly economically disadvantaged population, with about 71% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch.

Richardson Elementary has shown remarkable improvement in student attendance, reducing chronic absenteeism from 28.9% in 2021-2022 to just 19.0% in 2024-2025—a 34% drop that now outperforms the state average. This is a significant achievement for a school serving a high-poverty community. Academically, the school demonstrates a notable strength in 6th grade, where students achieved 54.2% proficiency in English Language Arts in 2024-2025, well above the state average of 38.6%. Science and social studies are also bright spots, with 5th graders exceeding state averages in both subjects. The school spends $14,026 per student, which is more efficient than nearby Alcona Elementary School, which spends over $3,000 more per student yet achieves significantly lower academic results.

When compared to regional peers, Richardson substantially outperforms Alcona Elementary across nearly all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2025-2026, Richardson's 3rd-grade ELA proficiency (22.2%) nearly doubled Alcona's (12.1%). However, Clara B Bolen Elementary School in the Tawas Area Schools district outperforms Richardson in overlapping grades, though Clara B Bolen serves a less economically disadvantaged population. Notably, Richardson's 6th graders match Clara B Bolen's 4th-grade performance, suggesting students may close the achievement gap by the time they leave elementary school. Areas for improvement include math instruction in upper elementary grades and supporting male students more effectively, but the school's stable performance and improving attendance make it a solid choice for families in the Oscoda area.

Open Quote Nice people, but the education is not the best. I am in 7th grade and had a question that was "There were 9 roses in the vase. Melanie cut some more roses from her flower garden. There are now 11 roses in the vase. How many roses did she cut?" I am highly disappointed with this. I do online school due to corona virus, and I have terrible teachers (except for study skills, social studies, and ELA). I hope that in school is better. If so, I will update. Close Quote
