Summary

New Haven Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 433 students in grades K-4 in the New Haven Community Schools district in Michigan. The school's academic performance has been inconsistent, with its statewide ranking fluctuating between 590 out of 1,344 Michigan elementary schools in 2021-2022 and 1,062 out of 1,488 in 2024-2025.

One key concern is the school's rising chronic absenteeism rates, which have increased from 30.8% in 2022-2023 to 43.8% in 2023-2024, significantly higher than the state average. Academically, New Haven Elementary School's proficiency rates in M-Step English Language Arts and Math for 3rd and 4th grades have been below the state and district averages, with some years showing better results and others struggling. The school's performance has also varied among different student subgroups, with African American students performing relatively well but White students and those from low-socioeconomic backgrounds facing challenges.

Comparing New Haven Elementary School to nearby schools in the Anchor Bay School District and L'Anse Creuse Public Schools district, the neighboring schools generally outperform New Haven Elementary in academic metrics, such as higher proficiency rates and lower chronic absenteeism. Despite the school's academic challenges, New Haven Elementary has seen a steady increase in per-student spending, suggesting the need to re-evaluate resource allocation and instructional strategies to drive sustainable improvements.

Open Quote Love this school! The principal lives in the village he really cares about the kids and the community. Its a growing village, small town feel but with all the amenities of a bigger area. NHE has technology, safe and up to date facilities, experienced teachers. They offer all the specials, 2 huge playgrounds, safe location, tucked away in a nice neighborhood. Family oriented, parent volunteers welcomed, large library, nice new gym. They offer arts, music, ipads and chromebooks. Nice office staff, welcoming of all, diverse and inclusive. Close Quote

Open Quote This district has come a long way over the past several years. I moved my kids from the local charter school to New Haven this past fall and have been nothing but happy with our choice. The technology is up-to-date, the staff is caring and involved, and the other families are friendly and social. Academically my kids have been challenged and excelled. MEAP scores reflect the positive changes New Haven has made. Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers at New Haven Elementary often go over and beyond because they truly care about their students. It's a wonderful district despite the reputation it has been given. It is a small town community and your child is not a needle in a hay stack! My two youngest have been in this district from preschool/kindergarten and they both are a grade level above in reading and math. This is also echoed by their meap scores as well. Don't knock it unless you've given them a chance. This district is on it's way up improving each year and my children are a testimony and result of that! Close Quote
