Summary

Stewart Elementary School in Stevensville, MI, serves 391 students from Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the highly-rated Lakeshore School District (Berrien), which ranks in the 90th percentile statewide.

Stewart is a solid school that has seen better days. While it currently holds a 4-star rating and ranks in the 71st percentile statewide (437th out of 1,492 Michigan elementary schools), this is a notable drop from its peak a decade ago when it consistently earned 5-star ratings and ranked in the 90th percentile. The school remains above state averages in most subjects, but it now trails both of its district peers significantly. Hollywood Elementary School and Roosevelt Elementary School both rank in the 87th percentile, and the gap is most striking in 5th-grade math—only 27.3% of Stewart's 5th graders are proficient, compared to 65.2% at Hollywood and 63.1% at Roosevelt. This represents a dramatic 23.5-point drop from the previous year at Stewart, while both peer schools improved. Notably, 3rd-grade math proficiency at Stewart remains strong at 55%, suggesting students are falling behind as they progress through the grades. The school also spends more per student ($13,646) than nearby higher-performing St. Joseph Public Schools like Brown School ($12,338), raising questions about how resources are being deployed.

There are some bright spots. Chronic absenteeism has improved dramatically, dropping from 31.8% post-pandemic to 13.8%—well below the state average of 27.9%. However, the school is becoming less effective for economically disadvantaged students, with its ranking for low-income students plummeting from the 79th to the 44th percentile in just two years. This growing achievement gap, combined with the 5th-grade math collapse, suggests Stewart needs targeted intervention in upper elementary grades to reverse its downward trajectory and better serve all its students.

Open Quote Stewart Elementary is a wonderful school. I have 2 children that are currently attending. The teachers are outstanding. Education and compassion are priority on the list at Stewart. Studies are top notched and made fun for the kids. They have an outstanding math program that the kids love. Lots of extra opportunities for the children unite after school with events throughout the year. Parents are encouraged and welcome to help at the school. Stewart Elementary is a great "family" to be a part of. Close Quote

Open Quote Our 5 yr old started school here this year (2009), and we are surprisingly pleased with how professional, efficient, reliable, and kind the staff is. They have been incredibly accomodating to my child with special needs.

One downside is that the facility itself is showing its age, and there is no A/C in the classrooms or gymnasium - only in the main office and library at the time I wrote this (Dec 2009). The good thing is that it really only gets hot in September and early October, and again in May and June. Close Quote
