Jackson Pathways

Jackson Pathways is a small alternative high school in Jackson, MI, serving just 77 students in grades 9-12 within the Jackson Public Schools district. It shares a campus with the much larger Jackson High School, and serves a student body where 87% qualify for free or reduced lunch—a significantly higher rate than the district's other high school.

The biggest challenge facing Jackson Pathways is attendance. A staggering 79% of students are chronically absent, meaning they miss a substantial number of school days. This rate is nearly double the district average and about triple the state average. This directly impacts academics, as only about 12% of 11th graders are proficient in science and 15% in social studies—both roughly one-third of state averages. The dropout rate is also high at 20.5%, more than double the rate at nearby Vandercook Lake High School. However, there is a positive trend: the graduation rate has climbed from a low of 37.9% in 2021 to 71.7% recently, which is actually above the district average. The school has also added more teachers, improving the student-to-teacher ratio from 25:1 to about 15:1.

Compared to other alternative programs, Jackson Pathways sits in the middle. For example, East Jackson Virtual Academy has a much higher dropout rate, while Woodville Community Center in the Western School District serves a similar population but has dramatically better attendance (only 8% chronically absent). This shows that high absenteeism isn't inevitable for alternative schools. While Jackson Pathways has made real progress since the pandemic, its future success will depend on finding ways to get students into the classroom consistently and maintaining the recent increases in staffing and funding.
