Summary

Richards Middle School in Fraser, MI, serves 661 students in grades 7 and 8 as part of the Fraser Public Schools district, and it stands out as a high-performing academic leader in its corner of Macomb County.

For parents, the headline is simple: Richards gets strong results. The school holds a 4-star rating and ranks in the 71st percentile statewide, placing it well above nearby options like Warren Woods Middle School (463rd in the state), Carleton Middle School (507th), and Carter Middle School (477th). Even compared to schools in the highly regarded Chippewa Valley Schools district, Richards outranks both Wyandot Middle School and Algonquin Middle School. What makes this even more impressive is that Richards achieves these outcomes while spending less per student ($14,371) than nearly all of its neighbors—Warren Woods spends $16,352 and Carleton spends $18,795, yet both trail Richards significantly in rankings. English Language Arts is a particular strength, with 7th-grade M-Step proficiency at 48.3%, a full 10 points above the state average.

Perhaps the most remarkable finding is how well Richards supports students from low-income backgrounds. The school ranks in the 79th percentile statewide for its effectiveness with low socio-economic status students—higher than its overall rank—and also excels with its Hispanic student population, ranking in the 84th percentile. This makes Richards a clear outlier in a region where nearby schools like Roseville Middle School (9th percentile) and Clintondale Middle School (12th percentile) struggle dramatically. However, the school faces challenges: chronic absenteeism sits at 34.3%, higher than the state average of 27.9%, and performance for Special Education students dropped to the 30th percentile in 2025-2026. Math scores, while at or above state averages, are less consistent than ELA. For parents, Richards offers a proven, cost-effective education that lifts up students who might struggle elsewhere—but it's worth asking about attendance support and how the school plans to strengthen outcomes for all student subgroups.

Open Quote This school openly allows bullies to thrive. My child was photographed teased and threatened on school property and electronically via school provided devices. The principal and superintendent did nothing and my child continues to be harassed by these children and the school refuses to listen. Close Quote
