Summary

Comstock High School in Kalamazoo, MI, serves 358 students in grades 9-12 and is part of the Comstock Public Schools district, which currently holds a 2-star rating. The school has experienced significant ups and downs in recent years, showing a strong recovery in 2023-2024 before declining again to a 1-star rating and the 21st percentile statewide for the 2025-2026 school year.

Academically, the most pressing concern is a sharp drop in reading and writing scores. In 2023-2024, 49% of 11th graders were proficient in SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, nearly matching the state average of 51.3%. By 2025-2026, that figure plummeted to 30.2%, while the state average held steady at 52.1%. Math proficiency is even more troubling, with only 7.9% of 11th graders proficient in SAT Math compared to the state average of 26.5%. This is not a new issue—math scores have fluctuated between 7.9% and 18.6% over the past four years, and 9th and 10th-grade PSAT scores (8% and 9.4% proficient) suggest the problem starts early. Chronic absenteeism remains a challenge at 37.2%, nearly 10 points above the state average, which likely contributes to these struggles. Notably, the school spends $29,582 per student—far more than nearby Parchment High School ($16,795)—yet outcomes are significantly lower.

For context, Parchment High School, located just 2.5 miles away with a similar enrollment and percentage of economically disadvantaged students, outperforms Comstock across nearly every metric. Parchment's SAT EBRW proficiency is 43.2% versus Comstock's 30.2%, and its graduation rate is 90.6% versus 81.9%. This comparison suggests that demographic factors alone don't determine outcomes. On a positive note, Comstock's graduation rate of 81.9% is dramatically higher than its own district's average of 59.0%, indicating the high school is a relative success story within Comstock Public Schools. While the school faces real challenges, particularly in math and for students from low socio-economic backgrounds, it performs better than alternative programs like Kalamazoo Prep Academy and Youth Center School, which serve higher-need populations with graduation rates below 3%.

Open Quote The programming at Comstock High School is competitive with any school in the area and far exceeds most schools of its small-school size. The sports and other extra-curricular offerings are very appropriate and offer a wide array of students opportunities to participate and be competitive. Successes include a nationally competitive JA Titan program, a high functioning Band of Blue that receives high marks regularly, and an auto mechanics program that routinely brings back students who win competitions.

I love this high school. It has a lot to offer: a small school feel with big school opportunities. Close Quote
