Summary

West Bendle Elementary School in Burton, MI, serves 209 students in grades 3 through 5 within the Bendle Public Schools district, where over 92% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, reflecting the high-need nature of the surrounding community.

While West Bendle's overall state test scores have historically placed it in the bottom quartile of Michigan elementary schools, there are several encouraging signs for parents to consider. The school has shown consistent year-over-year improvement in its state ranking, climbing from the 15th percentile in 2022-2023 to the 28th percentile in 2025-2026—a positive trajectory that contrasts with stagnation seen at some nearby schools. Notably, West Bendle's performance for its low-income students is a standout: this subgroup ranked in the 41st percentile statewide in 2025-2026, earning a 2-star rating. This is actually higher than the overall rankings of nearby Atherton Elementary School (29th percentile) and Burton Glen Charter Academy (39th percentile), suggesting the school is finding ways to support its primary student population effectively. Chronic absenteeism, while still high at 33.7%, has dropped dramatically from a peak of 75% in 2020-2021 and is now well below the district average of 47.6%, indicating better attendance management than its sister school, South Bendle Elementary School.

Parents should be aware of a clear pattern in test scores: 3rd graders perform significantly better than 4th and 5th graders. For example, 3rd-grade math proficiency was 39.2% in 2025-2026, compared to just 19.7% in 4th grade and 18.6% in 5th grade. The 5th-grade math scores have been a particular concern, though they have improved from a low of 4.17% proficiency in 2022-2023. A comparison with Reid Elementary School, just 3 miles away in the Grand Blanc Community Schools district, highlights the impact of socioeconomic factors: Reid has a 46% poverty rate and significantly higher test scores (43.2% 4th-grade ELA proficiency vs. West Bendle's 23.9%). Despite these challenges, West Bendle's upward trend and relative success with its low-income students offer a hopeful picture for families considering this school.

Open Quote This current school year 16/17 have two grand sons attending Bendle West. With the conclusion of this school year now within a matter of days left, both one in the third, the eldest in the fifth are graduating their grades both with a second grade comprehension level in all regards.(2.5 /2.9).. I find this highly disappointing from the teaching staff to the principal who seems to hold little concern in resolving issues. Close Quote
