Summary

Bark River-Harris JrSr High School is a small, rural public school in Harris, MI, serving 311 students in grades 7 through 12 within the Bark River-Harris School District.

This school is on a remarkable upward trajectory. After years of middling performance, its state ranking jumped from the 39th to the 70th percentile in just one year, a sign that recent changes are taking hold. The most striking strengths are in the middle grades and early high school. Eighth graders consistently post exceptional scores in Science (56% proficient vs. 39% statewide) and Social Studies (63% vs. 50%), and 9th graders shine in English Language Arts, with nearly 84% proficient on the PSAT compared to the state average of 60%. The school also does a notably good job supporting its low-income students, who perform better than the school's overall average—an uncommon and encouraging finding. However, there are clear challenges. On the positive side, Bark River-Harris maintains a lower student-teacher ratio (16:1) than either Gladstone or Escanaba, and its 88.1% graduation rate far exceeds that of local alternative programs like Phoenix Alternative High School. For parents, this is a school with genuine middle-school excellence and a clear focus on improvement, but one that still has work to do in math and upper-level high school preparation.
