Summary

South Canton Scholars Charter Academy is a K-8 charter school in Canton, MI, serving 822 students and operating as its own district, with a strong record of academic achievement that places it among the top schools in the state.

This school consistently earns top marks, ranking 24th out of 625 districts in Michigan—putting it in the top 4% statewide. That’s a standout result when you compare it to the nearby Plymouth-Canton Community Schools district, which ranks 106th. What makes this even more impressive is that nearly 47% of students at South Canton Scholars qualify for free or reduced lunch, yet the school still ranks in the 95th percentile for students from low-income backgrounds and the 98th percentile for African American students. In other words, the school is getting excellent results across all groups of learners, not just a select few. For example, its 5th-grade ELA proficiency rate (65.7%) beats most nearby Plymouth-Canton elementary schools, including Workman Elementary School and Eriksson Elementary School, despite serving a higher percentage of students from low-income families.

South Canton Scholars also stands out for its middle school results. While many nearby schools only go through 5th grade, this school extends to 8th grade, and its test scores there are exceptionally high—8th-grade social studies proficiency (78.9%) and science proficiency (68.4%) are nearly double the state averages. The school has also made big strides in attendance: chronic absenteeism dropped from 30.8% in 2021-2022 to just 12.2% in 2024-2025, well below the state average of 27.9% and better than Achieve Charter Academy (15.3%), another high-performing K-8 charter located just over two miles away. One area for growth is special education, where the school’s ranking slipped to the 46th percentile—a contrast to its top-tier results elsewhere. Still, with per-student spending of $12,302—significantly less than nearby Plymouth-Canton elementary schools, which spend between $15,537 and $18,722—South Canton Scholars delivers strong outcomes efficiently, making it a compelling option for families seeking a high-performing, cost-effective school.

Open Quote The pick up and drop off seems dangerous, pumping cars through there with poor communication, a lot of times I sit there and my child never comes out so I have to pull up to an even more uncomfortable spot and wait longer! This school is very UN-AMERICAN! They are completely conformed to the Arab/Indian culture, peanut butter is completely banned, Students are NOT allowed to celebrate Christmas or Halloween, and discouraged from talking about it! In 10 years this will be an ALL Arab/Indian school! Makes me sick that my kid has to feel like a minority, if foreigners want to be here they need to learn the AMERICAN way of life and embrace it, not expect AMERICA to conform to there religions and beliefs they brought here! This schools score is based soley on test scores! If you pick up your kid an hour early they count them absent for the whole day also! There is WAY more to a good school than this! Close Quote

Open Quote Excellent school. The good thing at this school is that the principal and the overall staff here is focused on academics. Close Quote
