Voyageur Academy is a public charter school in Detroit, MI, serving 789 students in grades K-8, where nearly all students (96-99%) come from economically disadvantaged households. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 4th percentile of Michigan schools for nearly a decade, with proficiency rates on state tests drastically below averages across all subjects and grade levels.

When compared to nearby schools within a 1.7-mile radius, Voyageur stands out for its significantly lower academic performance. For example, in 3rd-grade math, only 14.3% of Voyageur students were proficient, compared to 35.2% at Munger ElementaryMiddle School and 29.7% at Bennett Elementary School. While some neighboring schools have shown improvement, Voyageur's state ranking has actually dropped from the 7th to the 4th percentile in recent years. The school also faces a severe student-to-teacher ratio of 23:1, dramatically higher than nearby schools which range from 12.6:1 to 19:1. Chronic absenteeism has been extremely high, fluctuating between 45% and 70% over the past five years, far exceeding the state average of around 28-30%.

Despite spending $18,322 per student in 2023-2024—comparable to or higher than better-performing Detroit Public Schools neighbors—this investment has not translated into improved outcomes. One notable exception: Voyageur shows relative strength with its Hispanic and English Language Learner students, ranking in the 17th and 20th percentiles respectively, compared to its overall 4th percentile ranking. The school also demonstrates a slight edge in 8th-grade PSAT English Language Arts (22.8% proficient), though still far below the state average of 64.8%. Families in this area have clear alternatives, including Academy of the Americas at Logan and Cesar Chavez Academy Intermediate, both located within a third of a mile and outperforming Voyageur in several grade-level assessments.
