Vandenboom Alternative High School has seen fluctuating performance in its statewide ranking, ranging from 218 out of 739 schools in 2024-2025 (4-star rating) to 538 out of 561 schools in 2020-2021 (0-star rating). In comparison, the nearby Marquette Senior High School has consistently ranked higher, ranging from 57 out of 739 schools in 2024-2025 (5-star rating) to 30 out of 743 schools in 2023-2024 (5-star rating). The school's performance across different student subgroups has also been mixed, with female students ranking higher than male students and the school's special education students performing well, but its low socioeconomic status students seeing more varied results.

Vandenboom Alternative High School faces several challenges, including lower academic performance in areas like M-Step/Science, M-Step/Social Studies, and SAT/Evidence-Based Reading and Writing compared to the district and state averages. The school also has significantly higher rates of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 25.0% in 2022-2023 to 62.9% in 2023-2024, compared to the nearby Marquette Senior High School at 29.5% in 2023-2024. Additionally, the school serves a more economically disadvantaged student population, with a higher percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients, which may contribute to its lower academic performance. However, the school's increased per-student spending and focus on supporting its unique student population suggest that it is making efforts to address these challenges and improve student outcomes.

Open Quote This has got to be one of the best schools in our area; the teachers are wonderful and caring, and the students benefit from these teachers' outstanding performance. The curriculum which is offered there is on a level consistent with future success in college and/or other technical training.

I've had two of my children graduate from there, and three more will be. I have such a high regard for this school, that my husband, myself, and one other college student are volunteer "teachers" there now, teaching the local Native American language.

Again, I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this school. Close Quote
