Summary:

The Hamtramck School District of the City of serves approximately 2,874 students across 8 schools—five elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools—in a densely populated, predominantly low-income urban community just outside Detroit, where every school reports free/reduced lunch rates above 76%.

For parents, the standout story is Tau Beta School, which defies its challenging demographics. Despite having the district's highest poverty rate (87.7%), Tau Beta posts the lowest chronic absenteeism at just 18.4%—far better than the district average of 45.2% and even below the state rate. Its 4th grade math proficiency of 37% is more than triple the district average and nearly matches the state, while its 5th grade science (23.1%) doubles the district norm. In contrast, Holbrook School shows the most troubling trend, having fallen from the 41st to the 24th percentile statewide, with 51.6% chronic absenteeism and the highest poverty rate (88.7%). Among the two Dickinson elementaries, Dickinson East Elementary School consistently outperforms Dickinson West Elementary School—East's 6th grade ELA proficiency (27.8%) is nearly four times West's (7.4%), and East enjoys a better student-teacher ratio (12.9:1 vs. 15:1).

At the secondary level, Kosciuszko School shines as the middle school bright spot, with 8th grade PSAT ELA proficiency of 41.5%—the district's strongest secondary result. Horizon High School, the alternative school, graduates students at a slightly higher rate (81.4%) than the traditional Hamtramck High School (80.9%) and cuts the dropout rate to 10% versus 16.9%, though 76.2% of its students are chronically absent. Early Childhood Elementary School offers the district's best student-teacher ratio (10.1:1), a strategic investment in early learning. District-wide, science and social studies show the largest gaps—5th grade science sits 28 points below the state—and chronic absenteeism exceeds 40% in six of eight schools, making attendance the critical lever for improvement.
