About the Smarter Balanced Assessments: The Maine Educational Assessment (MEA) includes required assessments in Mathematics, English Language Arts/Literacy, Science and English Language Proficiency. In the spring of 2015, Maine used the MEA Mathematics and ELA/Literacy developed by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) as its statewide assessment. Legislation enacted in June 2015 discontinued Maine’s membership in the SBAC. As a result, the Department worked through a competitive process of determining a subsequent method of assessment including the creation of a task force to inform requirements and gather feedback. A Request for Proposal was issued in September, 2015, and the contract to implement the spring 2016 assessment for Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy for grades 3-8 and 3rd year high school has been awarded to Measured Progress, Inc.Maine DOE
