Summary

Ocean Avenue Elementary School is a public school in Portland, Maine, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade. It is part of the Portland Public Schools district, which has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Ocean Avenue consistently outperforms the district and state averages in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science proficiency. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, 66.87% of Ocean Avenue students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 62.33% for the district and 63.84% for the state. However, the school struggles with lower rankings for its African American, Hispanic, and Low Socioeconomic Status student subgroups. Ocean Avenue also experiences high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 23.4% to 26.1% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average.

While Ocean Avenue generally outperforms nearby schools in the Portland Public Schools district, such as East End Community School, Amanda C Rowe School, and Gerald E Talbot Community School, it lags behind the high-performing Longfellow School-Portland, which is ranked 2nd in the state. The high chronic absenteeism rate and increasing free/reduced lunch rates at Ocean Avenue suggest that the school may be serving a more economically disadvantaged student population compared to the surrounding schools.

Open Quote An amazing school. A true ethnic mix of students racial, 2nd language, and socioeconomic. Their positive test ranking in Maine's largest city, all while having an immensely diverse student body is a testament to their dedication and commitment to success. From their International Baccalaureate program to their community integration, it is no wonder that there is a waiting list each enrollment period for out of town exceptions to attend.
