The Calverton School

My child was an interesting challenge that the previous three schools my daughter had attended in RI had not been able to fully engage academically.

Because of her high IQ, the public school system in RI discouraged me from sending her to a local public school. The RI private schools had been highly touted and she easily met the requirements for attending their schools. In some grades, she was a leader and in others her social ranking had diminished, but she was always accepted as part of the group.

We moved to MD, and we found the prestigious private school she was enrolled into was approximately one year ahead in mathematics. We found this school she attended had a lot of disharmony within each grade and poor internal class management. It was not uncommon for a teacher to leave her class to go home to nurse her child, leaving her students just sitting there.

Obviously, this was not an optimal learning situation. As a result, my daughter became bored, and developed her own way of challenging herself. The first semester, she would get all As, thereby proving she was capable of doing the work. The second semester she did no work at all, and the last semester, she would do everything in her power to bring her grades back up again to an A. This is when I pulled her from this school.

So for the last three years of HS, she attended The Calverton School. As I understand it, the entire private school curriculum for the State of MD is developed from the work of Mr. Dan Waldspurger, a Calverton School English teacher, and some others. In other words, The Calverton School sets the standard for private school education in the State of MD.

My daughter was very fortunate to have had Mr. Waldspurger as her teacher, counselor and advocate. He was able to develop a system to fully challenge my daughter so that not only did she graduate with honors and awards, her college recommendations were extraordinary, enabling her to get into a top ranked College and University. She had developed a good work ethic, and a mature independence.

What also sets The Calverton School apart is the camaraderie of the students. No one is left out, even if they are different. Every student is greeted at the door with a handshake by the school faculty or staff. The whole child’s development is nurtured and cherished in this very rare and exceptional country school.
