Summary

Rockland Woods Elementary in Hagerstown, MD, is a mid-sized school serving 655 students from Pre-K through 5th grade, part of the Washington County Public Schools district, and has consistently earned a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger, placing it in the top third of Maryland elementary schools.

Rockland Woods stands out for its exceptional performance with students from lower-income backgrounds, ranking in the 92nd percentile statewide for serving low socio-economic status students—a remarkable achievement that sets it apart from nearly every nearby school. The school also excels in mathematics, consistently outperforming both the district and state averages, and boasts a low chronic absenteeism rate of 14.6%, which is dramatically lower than the district average of 29.0% and far below rates at nearby schools like Bester Elementary (44.3%) and Salem Avenue Elementary (37.4%). However, there is a notable "5th grade slide" in math, with only 22.7% of 5th graders proficient compared to 48.4% in 3rd grade, suggesting a potential curriculum gap as concepts become more complex. Additionally, while the school is highly effective for disadvantaged students, its White students rank in only the 34th percentile statewide, indicating that not all subgroups are reaching their full potential.

Compared to nearby "high-flyers" like Williamsport Elementary and Emma K. Doub Elementary, which achieve higher overall rankings and test scores, Rockland Woods' performance is particularly impressive given its lower poverty context and efficient spending of $16,936 per student—below the average of its peers. For example, Lincolnshire Elementary spends over $21,000 per student but achieves far worse academic results. Overall, Rockland Woods is a stable, above-average school that excels in math and attendance, with a key strength in closing the achievement gap for economically disadvantaged students, though it should focus on improving 5th-grade math and ensuring all student groups achieve at their highest potential.

Open Quote The school is amazing. The staff is wonderful and well educated. The activity's they offer to keep the kids both learning and having fun is why my kids love it here. I have two children who go here and both are magnet kids now in middle school. The principle is firm but fair and they have the latest technology in the classrooms. I am very happy with this school.
