The school is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, which is ranked 22 out of 25 in Maryland and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Rose Valley Elementary has a diverse student population, with a higher percentage of Hispanic students (45.63%) compared to the surrounding schools, and a lower percentage of White students (3.83%). Academically, the school consistently ranks in the bottom half of Maryland elementary schools, with performance on state assessments (MCAP) significantly below the state and district averages in both mathematics and English language arts across all grade levels. However, the school's African American students perform relatively better, ranking in the top 20% of Maryland elementary schools for this subgroup in the 2020-2021 school year. Rose Valley Elementary has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 54.11% to 70.22% over the past 3 years, which is significantly higher than the state and district averages.

While Rose Valley Elementary struggles academically, some of the nearby schools, such as Avalon Elementary, Oxon Hill Elementary, and Fort Washington Forest Elementary, perform better on state assessments and have higher rankings within the state. The school's high per-student spending, ranging from $14,564 to $17,182 over the past 3 years, suggests that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution, and the school may need to examine how resources are being utilized and allocated to support student learning more effectively.

Open Quote I was leery of sending my son to our neighborhood school. When he didn't lottery into another school we didn't really have a choice. I was pleasantly surprised that Rose Valley is run so well. The administrative staff is great. The Principal and Assistant Principal are youthful, caring, confident and professional. The teachers are attentive and committed. I especially enjoyed the open line of communication between his 2nd grade teacher and the parents. We received videos to help with homework and emails keeping us abreast of social issues we, as parents, needed to address in order to make the days go more smoothly and help her put the focus back on learning. I believe the one missing element to make this a stellar school is parental involvement. I'll be joining the PTO again in the 2017-2018 school year to do my part and I hope others will, too. It really does take a village. Close Quote
