Summary

Oaklands Elementary is a PK-5 school in Laurel, MD, serving 483 students within the Prince George's County Public Schools district, which ranks in the bottom 12% of Maryland districts. The school serves a high-poverty population, with over 90% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch, and despite a low student-to-teacher ratio of 12.4:1 and above-average per-pupil spending of $22,052, it consistently ranks in the bottom 20-25% of Maryland elementary schools, with academic outcomes significantly below district and state averages.

The most critical differentiator is Oaklands' extremely low mathematics proficiency, with only 8.5% of students proficient in Math in the 2025-2026 school year—the lowest rate among all nearby schools, including its closest neighbor, Deerfield Run Elementary (14.9%), and well below the district average of 13.7% and state average of 27.1%. This is not a one-year issue; math proficiency has remained below 10% for three consecutive years. Additionally, chronic absenteeism is severe, with 37.6% of students chronically absent in 2024-2025, the highest rate among nearby schools and above the district average of 30.2%. This persistent absenteeism, combined with a declining state ranking from the 25th percentile in 2022-2023 to the 9th percentile in 2025-2026, paints a concerning picture for the school's trajectory.

Interestingly, Oaklands shows a relative strength in English Language Arts (ELA), with 23.9% of students proficient—nearly three times its own math rate, though still below district (38.9%) and state (51.7%) averages. A stark contrast emerges with Montpelier Elementary, just 1.73 miles away, which serves a nearly identical poverty rate (90.27% vs. 90.92%) but achieves over three times the math proficiency (26.5%) and nearly double the ELA proficiency (43%), suggesting factors like school leadership and teaching quality drive outcomes beyond poverty. Nearby schools from other districts, such as Laurel Woods Elementary (Howard County) and Monarch Global Academy PCS Laurel Campus (Anne Arundel County), with lower poverty rates, achieve proficiency rates 2-3 times higher, highlighting the impact of district resources and demographics.

Open Quote Oaklands ES has a diverse population with a growing FARMS community. The administration and staff work hard to meet the needs of the students. Although struggling to MSA targets the students are learning and making progress. Oaklands has a "can-do" attitude and continues to strive for excellence. Kudos for their efforts! It's sad that the test scores don't reflect their efforts. Close Quote
