Summary

Brandywine Elementary is a K-5 public school in Brandywine, MD, serving 572 students as part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, where over 58% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch and chronic absenteeism is high at 32.6%.

The most critical concern for Brandywine is its extremely low math proficiency, with only 9.4% of all students meeting standards—far below the state average of 27.1% and even lower than the district average of 13.7%. This is especially stark in 5th grade, where just 2.4% of students are proficient in math, compared to 14% districtwide and 30.2% statewide. However, there is a notable bright spot in 4th grade English Language Arts (ELA), where 36.5% of students are proficient—higher than the district average and outperforming nearby schools like Clinton Grove Elementary (25.5%) and Marlton Elementary (18.8%). Despite spending $16,274 per student—more than many peers—academic outcomes remain among the worst in the area, suggesting challenges in how resources are used.

A compelling comparison is with Baden Elementary, just 5 miles away, which serves a higher percentage of students from low-income households (86.96%) yet dramatically outperforms Brandywine in every subject, including math (32.1% vs. 9.4%) and ELA (45.2% vs. 30.4%). This indicates that Brandywine’s struggles are tied to school-specific factors like instruction and culture, not just demographics. The school also shows a "5th grade cliff," with performance dropping sharply from 3rd to 5th grade, and it is particularly failing its male students and those from low-income backgrounds. While chronic absenteeism is a widespread issue in the region, schools like Malcolm Elementary (15.1%) prove it can be overcome.

Open Quote The class sizes are too large. The vice principal is not friendly or helpful. Other staff is pleasant, especially the office staff. The teachers seem to want to help our children but are very limited due to the large class sizes.

Physically, the school is pretty old and does not have a lot of the technology and other tools that other newer PG county schools have. I do not feel the security at this school is very adequate either. The front doors have no windows or surveillance to be able to see who they are letting in. But at least they are locking the doors during the day now.

If I could withdraw my children and place them in a better school I would do it in a heartbeat. Close Quote
