Summary

Great Seneca Creek Elementary is a K-5 school in Germantown, MD, serving 487 students within the Montgomery County Public Schools district. While the district ranks highly in Maryland, Great Seneca Creek has consistently performed near the middle of the pack among elementary schools, earning a 2-star rating for the 2025-2026 school year. The school's academic proficiency rates fall below district averages, with only 34.9% of students proficient in Math and 44.2% in English Language Arts, compared to nearby schools like Diamond Elementary (70.9% Math, 76.4% ELA) and Spark M. Matsunaga Elementary (64.3% Math, 73.1% ELA), which significantly outperform the district.

A notable concern is the sharp decline in academic performance as students move through upper elementary grades. Math proficiency drops from 48.8% in 3rd grade to 27.2% in 5th grade, a trend not seen in higher-performing peers like Diamond Elementary, where proficiency actually increases. Additionally, chronic absenteeism is high at 25.8%, well above the district average of 22.6% and much higher than schools like Dr. Ronald E. McNair Elementary (17.0%). The school also spends $22,110 per student, more than Diamond Elementary ($19,076) and Dr. Ronald E. McNair Elementary ($17,471), yet achieves lower results, suggesting a need for more efficient resource use.

Great Seneca Creek is part of a cluster of struggling schools in Germantown, including nearby Clopper Mill Elementary, which faces similar challenges with low test scores and high absenteeism. However, the school shows strengths in serving specific student groups, ranking in the 74th percentile for Hispanic students and 73rd percentile for male students statewide, while struggling more with Asian and African American students. This suggests that targeted instructional strategies could help improve outcomes for all students. Despite these challenges, the school's favorable student-teacher ratio of 12.7:1 offers a foundation for potential improvement.

Open Quote I am not sure why this school has a lower rating. My 2 kids go here, and we have been very happy! The teachers are fabulous, the principle is younger, approachable and very hands-on and the PTA is excellent. The only school in the area to have several extracurricular activities Talent Show, International Night, Book fairs and etc. etc. Smaller class sizes for KG-2nd grade. Like max of 16 students! Nothing to complain about. We were skeptical at first, but continued to stay here just for the school! Close Quote
