Summary

North Bethesda Middle is a high-performing public school in Bethesda, MD, serving 1,224 students in grades 6 through 8 as part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district, which ranks in the top 32% of districts in Maryland. This school has a consistent history of academic excellence, earning a 5-star rating from Schooldigger every year since 2015-2016, and it consistently places in the top 10% of all Maryland middle schools. While it is an elite school, it operates in a neighborhood of absolute elite schools, such as Thomas W. Pyle Middle (ranked #1 in the state) and Cabin John Middle (#8), making it a top-tier choice in a competitive area.

North Bethesda’s most striking differentiator is its exceptional performance in advanced mathematics. In the 2025-2026 school year, 76.5% of its students taking Algebra I were proficient, and 82% taking Geometry were proficient—rates dramatically higher than the district (30.5% and 67.6%) and state (21.3% and 44.5%) averages. This is notably higher than nearby schools like Cabin John Middle (59.3% Algebra I proficiency) and Herbert Hoover Middle (65% Algebra I proficiency), suggesting a strong pipeline for advanced math students. Additionally, the school has outstanding performance across diverse student groups, ranking in the 99th percentile for Female, Male, and Low Socio-Economic Status students, and in the 98th percentile for African American, Hispanic, and White students, demonstrating an ability to serve a diverse population at an elite level.

The school also boasts a low chronic absenteeism rate of 11.4% (2024-2025), less than half the district average of 22.6%, and comparable to other top schools like Cabin John Middle (10.3%) and Herbert Hoover Middle (10.9%). Interestingly, the "8th Grade Math Dip" seen across the area—where 8th-grade math proficiency rates are low (North Bethesda: 6.1%)—is not a sign of failure but reflects that top students are taking high school-level Algebra I or Geometry exams, where they excel. North Bethesda’s success is driven by factors like community support and effective resource allocation, as it spends $18,038 per student, less than some lower-performing nearby schools like Newport Mill Middle ($22,585 per student), which ranks in the 63rd percentile. This shows that higher spending does not guarantee higher performance.

Open Quote I have been a student at North Bethesda for one year now, and moving on to high school, and I must say that it has been some of the best school years I have ever experienced. Although there are a few flaws, overall it is one of the best middle schools I have been to. I live in a military family and have moved plenary of times, and make very little friends in the other schools. But at North Bethesda, the staff is very helpful to everyone, and many of the students are very friendly and are happy to be my friend. I will be tremendously sad when I have to move again, but North Bethesda will always go down as my favorite school so far. Close Quote
