Summary

Glen Haven Elementary is a PK-5 school in Silver Spring, MD, serving 540 students within the highly rated Montgomery County Public Schools district, where over 64% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch.

The school’s biggest challenge is a persistent gap in English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency. Only 36.5% of Glen Haven students are proficient in ELA, which is 22 percentage points below the district average. This gap is significant when compared to nearby schools like Woodlin Elementary (57.8%) and Forest Knolls Elementary (58.6%), which perform at or above the district average. Even Highland Elementary, with a similar percentage of students from low-income families, outperforms Glen Haven in ELA. Chronic absenteeism is also a major issue, with a rate of 24.8%—higher than the district average and much higher than top-performing nearby schools like Flora M. Singer Elementary (10.6%).

Despite these hurdles, there are bright spots. Glen Haven’s math proficiency (32.2%) actually exceeds the state average (27.1%), suggesting math instruction is a relative strength. The school is also on an upward trajectory, climbing from the 28th percentile statewide in 2023-2024 to the 43rd percentile in 2025-2026. This recent improvement in both math and ELA scores indicates that school leadership and staff are making effective changes, even as they work to overcome challenges related to poverty and attendance. The school spends $21,450 per student, higher than some higher-performing nearby schools, highlighting that the issues are complex and not simply about funding.

Open Quote I was worried originally about this school because of the ratings when we first moved to the area but I absolutely love the school!! There is a great community atmosphere. All the teachers are motivated and really want the children to succeed. The new principal is awesome! She is there to greet the kids every morning as they come through the door. The school has an open door policy so I never feel the disconnect I have felt with my son's schools in the past. My son is thriving there and loves it! Close Quote
