Summary

Tuscarora Elementary is a mid-sized school in Frederick, MD, serving 793 students in grades PK through 5 as part of the highly-rated Frederick County Public Schools district.

Tuscarora Elementary stands out for its consistent strength in mathematics, where it has outperformed the district average for the past four years—with 40.3% of students proficient in math compared to the district's 38.5% in the most recent data. This is a notable differentiator from nearby schools like Ballenger Creek Elementary, which had a math proficiency rate of just 25.8%, and Hillcrest Elementary at 19.1%. However, the school faces a persistent challenge in English Language Arts (ELA), where only 53.6% of students were proficient compared to the district average of 64%. This "ELA gap" has been consistent over the last four years, suggesting that while math instruction is a clear strength, literacy is an area needing focused improvement. Additionally, the school has shown strong performance for African American students, earning a 4-star rating in that subgroup, which is its highest subgroup rating.

Despite its academic strengths, Tuscarora Elementary is dealing with a growing concern around chronic absenteeism, which rose to 19.2% in the 2024-2025 school year—higher than the district average of 16.7%. This trend may be contributing to the school's plateau in overall state rankings, where it has maintained a steady 3-star rating over the past decade. In the broader educational landscape, Tuscarora occupies a reliable middle ground: it is not the highest-performing school in the area, like Parkway Elementary (47.2% math proficiency), nor among the lowest, like Hillcrest. This makes it a solid, consistent option for families seeking a stable academic environment in a neighborhood with a wide range of school performances.
