Summary

Middletown Middle in Middletown, MD, is a high-performing school serving 784 students in grades 6-8 as part of the highly-rated Frederick County Public Schools district, consistently ranking in the top 10-15% of all middle schools in Maryland over the past decade.

This school truly shines in English Language Arts (ELA), with 79.1% of students proficient—a remarkable 27.4 percentage points above the state average and even surpassing the highly-ranked Urbana Middle (78.8%). This strength is consistent across all grade levels. Additionally, the school excels at accelerating students into high school-level math, with 67.2% of students taking the Algebra I exam scoring proficient—more than double the district average and over three times the state average. While schools like Oakdale Middle (88%) have even higher Algebra I rates, Middletown's performance is still exceptionally strong. The school also boasts low chronic absenteeism (18.0%) compared to nearby peers like Monocacy Middle (22.0%) and Gov. Thomas Johnson Middle (22.3%), suggesting a highly engaged student body.

However, there is a notable contrast in math performance. While the accelerated Algebra I track is a standout, overall math proficiency (36.2%) falls below the district average (38.5%), with scores dropping significantly by 8th grade (21.9%). This suggests that students not in the accelerated track may need additional support. Interestingly, the school achieves these top-tier results despite having the highest student-teacher ratio (18.2) among nearby schools and spending less per student ($16,490) than some lower-performing peers like Crestwood Middle ($17,429). For parents, this means your child will benefit from an exceptional literacy program and strong opportunities for math acceleration, but you may want to pay close attention to general math instruction if your child is not on the accelerated track.

Open Quote I've gone to Middletown schools my entire life. I've never really liked Middletown, and just recently, there has been shooting threats held against Black students at our school. I don't even know of even 5 Black students in my own grade apparently, only 3 of our school is African-American. I am extremely disappointed. People at Middletown have always been racist, but the kids coming from the feeder schools (Myersville, Wolfsville, etc) have made it worse. The school / test scores may be good in Middletown, but the people here are horrible. Close Quote
