Summary

Carrolltowne Elementary in Sykesville, MD, is a high-performing school serving 593 students from Pre-K through 5th grade within the highly-ranked Carroll County Public Schools district, consistently earning top ratings and benefiting from a low student-teacher ratio of 14.6:1 and a very low rate of economic disadvantage (14.5% free/reduced-price meals).

What truly sets Carrolltowne apart is its exceptional 3rd-grade mathematics performance, with 84.1% proficiency—significantly higher than the district average (65.3%) and the state average (42.6%), and the highest among nearby Carroll County peers like Linton Springs Elementary (71.9%) and Piney Ridge Elementary (79%). This suggests a particularly effective early math curriculum. The school also invests more per student ($15,763) than these neighbors, correlating with smaller class sizes. However, Carrolltowne is a "middle child" in a high-achieving district, outperformed in overall state ranking by Linton Springs and Piney Ridge. Its English Language Arts (ELA) performance is consistently strong across all grades (72.8% overall), well above state and district averages.

An interesting finding is the stark educational divide between Carroll County and neighboring Baltimore County Public Schools. While Carrolltowne and its peers rank in the top 15% of the state, schools just miles away like Hernwood Elementary, New Town Elementary, and Deer Park Elementary rank in the bottom 50%. For Carrolltowne, areas for potential improvement include reducing its chronic absenteeism rate (14.7%), which is the highest among its five nearby Carroll County peers, and strengthening upper-elementary math and science to match its stellar 3rd-grade results.

Open Quote The teachers at Carrolltowne go above and beyond the call of duty. They constantly strive to create new and exciting ways to connect with the students. It is visible evident that they deeply care about each and every student and understand that they have much more than a "regular job". Our two children love to attend school and absolutely love their teachers. We could not ask for a better school that is so supportive to the children and the parents. If you live in the area you would be wasting your money by sending your child to a private school because none have the resources to provide this level of quality education. Close Quote

Open Quote I give this school no stars. My children unfortunately attend school here. The teachers are below average and do not communicate with parents. I am seeking an outside source to tutor my 6 yr old/ first grader because he was not taught the basic skills to survive in class. He is below level in every aspect, math, English, reading, comprehension skills, etc...It is so bad that he will need over 136 hours of tutoring to get him back to where he should be. Costing over $7,000. All the skills he will be taught at the tutoring center, should have been second nature to him. These skills should have been taught in school, by his teachers. Now I have to take time and money I don't have, to compensate for the schools inadequacies.
This school needs to be restructured from the ground level up. This school does not meet the students needs, whether it be learning, or safety. The administration is to busy covering their own butts to be concerned about our children. The principal is dishonest, deceitful, unethical and just downright should not be aloud around children in any way, shape, or form. Close Quote
