Summary

Nantucket Elementary in Crofton, MD, is a consistently high-performing school within the Anne Arundel County Public Schools district, serving 675 students from Pre-K through 5th grade in a relatively affluent community where about 28% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Nantucket stands out for its exceptional student attendance, with a chronic absenteeism rate of just 8.5%—far better than the district average of 19.9% and among the best in its peer group, trailing only Two Rivers Elementary (6.9%) and Crofton Meadows Elementary (8.0%). The school also excels in English Language Arts (ELA), with 66.5% of students proficient—10 points above the district average and nearly 15 points above the state average. However, math performance shows more variability, particularly in 5th grade where proficiency drops to 36%, compared to 54.1% at Crofton Woods Elementary. While not the top school in its competitive cluster—South Shore Elementary and Crofton Woods outperform it—Nantucket is a reliable, high-quality option that consistently ranks higher than nearby schools like Crofton Meadows and Odenton Elementary.

Nantucket is also a model of efficiency, achieving strong results with a per-student spending of $15,255, lower than peers like South Shore ($19,636) and Millersville Elementary ($19,174). Its school rank has remained remarkably stable over the past decade, hovering between the 73rd and 80th percentile, offering parents a predictable, proven educational environment. One area for improvement is supporting Asian students, who rank in the 18th percentile—a notable gap given the school's overall high performance. For families seeking a steady, high-quality elementary school with strong attendance and ELA outcomes, Nantucket is a standout choice.

Open Quote Overcrowded. Teachers will even tell you that the student-teacher ratio makes it hard to address individual student needs. Front staff makes you feel rude for entering the building. Teachers are friendly, but not as creative in the lower grades as I have heard discussed about other county elementary teachers. Curriculum is obviously good, but expectations of such young kids are insanely high and kids feel the pressure. School is not much fun anymore for many due to MSA pressure and bullying, mostly caused by the girls, who never seem to get reprimanded because, like 200 years ago, school is still completely designed for them in almost every way. Maryland is so progressive that I would've hoped my son would get the same education that my daughter will, but boys will still be boys and still struggle just because of that at schools like Nantucket. It's sad being that my expectations were so high because a bunch of parents rave about this school. I think it is delusional. I would just like my child to be more than awesome on the MSA. This school lacks character and fun. Close Quote
