Summary

Richard L. Wilkins Elementary School is a public elementary school in Stoughton, Massachusetts, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 333 students. The school's academic performance has been mixed, with proficiency rates in MCAS assessments ranging from 38% to 44% across different subject areas, generally higher than the Stoughton district average but lower than the state average.

One notable strength of Richard L. Wilkins Elementary is its strong performance among certain student subgroups, particularly African American and Hispanic students, who have ranked 12th and 64th, respectively, out of Massachusetts elementary schools in the 2024-2025 school year. In contrast, the school's performance for White and male students has been relatively lower. The school's higher per-student spending and lower student-teacher ratio compared to the state average may contribute to its ability to provide more individualized attention and support to students.

When compared to nearby schools, the academic performance patterns at Richard L. Wilkins Elementary are similar to other schools in the Stoughton district, such as South Elementary, Helen Hansen Elementary, and Joseph R. Dawe Junior Elementary. However, the schools in the neighboring Sharon district, such as Cottage Street and East Elementary, have consistently outperformed the Stoughton schools in MCAS assessments and statewide rankings.

Open Quote The safety of the West School is completely and utterly concerning to me as a parent of a 5 year old Kindergarten student. The teachers are not communicating to the parents what is occurring during the day. My child has been getting punched in class for months now. I have done everything imaginable and feel as though I have absorbed all of my recourses at this point. I find out that these incidents happen from my 5 year old not any one at the school, which I find completely unacceptable. It has gotten to the point where my child doesn't want to attend the West School any longer due to not being attended to when these altercations happen. I cannot understand where the teachers are or what they could possibly be doing that could be more important than dealing with these situations as they arise. How can it escalates to the point it does.is beyond me. Never in my life have I ever heard of a 5 year old getting suspended from school for hitting another student on more than one occasion. Something must be done to improve this for our children's sake, safety and future.

Sincerely,
An Extremely Concerned Parent Close Quote
