South End Middle School is a 163-student neighborhood school serving grades 6–8 on Margaret Street in Springfield, MA, and it is the smallest of the city's comprehensive middle schools — about 40% smaller than Van Sickle Prep (206 students). It sits in the Springfield district, which ranks 322nd of 351 in Massachusetts.

In 2025–26 the school posted the highest ELA (30.87%) and math (13.33%) proficiency of any comparable middle school in Springfield, ahead of STEM Middle Academy (22.67% ELA, 8.89% math), Van Sickle Academy (17.50%, 8.75%), Van Sickle Prep (15.34%, 6.88%), Impact Prep at Chestnut (10.87%, 5.82%) and Forest Park Middle (10.63%, 8.56%). It was the only school in that group to improve in all four tested subjects, and its 7th-grade ELA score of 44.90% beat both the district (18.60%) and the state (39.91%) — the only subject-and-grade cell where it exceeds Massachusetts. Its state ranking rose to 386th of 478 (19th percentile, 1 star), the best standing in its reported history.

These gains start from a very low base. Math (13.33%) and science (9.09%) remain below Springfield's own averages, and the school is still in the bottom fifth of Massachusetts middle schools — roughly 9 points behind the state in ELA and 28–32 points behind in math, science and civics. One bright spot: African American students here ranked in the 76th percentile statewide (4 stars), a comparison against similar students elsewhere, and low-income and special education students also moved up year over year. Two caveats: with 163 students, each grade holds only about 50–60 children, so single-year swings deserve caution, and Chestnut Accelerated Middle School (Talented and Gifted) is a selective program, not a like-for-like comparison. Nearby Roberta G. Doering School in Agawam spends about the same per student ($17,898 vs. $18,729) and posts similar ELA (33.13%) but far higher math (34.20%) and science (41.80%).
