Summary:

Comprehensive Grammar School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Methuen, MA, with a student population of 955. The school is part of the Methuen school district, which is ranked 268 out of 356 districts in Massachusetts and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Comprehensive Grammar School faces several academic challenges. Its performance on MCAS Next Generation tests is generally below the state average, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts (35.62%) and Mathematics (31.42%) lower than the state averages of 42.29% and 40.6%, respectively. The school consistently ranks in the bottom 30% of Massachusetts elementary schools, and its performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students with low socioeconomic status performing below their peers in the state. However, the school's academic performance is generally higher than some of the nearby schools in the Lawrence school district, such as Edward F. Parthum and Oliver Elementary.

Comprehensive Grammar School has also experienced a gradual decline in its White student population, from 47.17% in 2020-2021 to 41.99% in 2022-2023, while the Hispanic student population has increased from 38.97% to 45.97% over the same period. This shift in racial composition may have implications for the school's academic performance and resource allocation. Additionally, the school's performance on MCAS tests varies significantly across grade levels, with 7th and 8th-grade students performing better in ELA compared to 5th-grade students, suggesting the need for targeted interventions and support for specific student populations.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The teachers are underqualified and did a poor job of preparing me for high school. They treated students disrespectfully (some times the disrespect was based on race, gender and sexual orientation) and didn't receive any consequences when receive by parents and students alike. There were a few avoidable incidents regarding the middle school that could have been avoided if competence was present. Most issues involving teachers and student were more often than not handled unprofessionally and on occasion had students need therapeutic counseling (outside of school). All and all, the vast majority of the teachers behaved unprofessionally and sometimes mentally abusive to students. This review was written in 2022. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
