Summary

Martha's Vineyard Charter Public School is an alternative public charter school serving 175 students from kindergarten through 12th grade in West Tisbury, Massachusetts. The school has demonstrated exceptional performance in recent years, with a 100% four-year graduation rate in the 2023-2024 school year, significantly higher than the state average.

While the school's English Language Arts proficiency rates are generally higher than the state, its mathematics and science proficiency rates have been more variable, with some grades performing above the state average and others below. The school's low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 8.0 to 8.9 students per teacher, suggests it may be able to provide more individualized attention and support to its students. Additionally, the school's relatively high spending per student, at $35,079 in the 2020-2021 school year, may contribute to its ability to offer specialized programs and resources.

Despite the school's overall strong performance, its dropout rates have fluctuated, with a 0% rate in 2023-2024 but a much higher 22.2% rate in 2022-2023. Understanding the factors contributing to these fluctuations could provide valuable insights for the school to maintain consistently low dropout rates and continue enhancing the educational experiences and outcomes for its diverse student population.

Open Quote This is a highly functioning K-8 school. The self-directed learner concept does NOT work for high school students however! I have seen with my own eyes how this fails high school students in so many ways. Here are a few: 1. No consistent policy for discipline, resulting in unchecked behavior including inappropriate behavior and swearing 2. Expectations are lowered due to no one wanting to do anything because there are no actual grades, therefore resulting in no motivation 3. Tipped classroom demographic forcing high achieving students to be left by the wayside as they patiently wait for teachers to reach students who do what ever they want during class 4. low daily attendance, with NO repercussions 5. students who are lied to in regards to an actual G.P.A. equation for merit based schools who won't accept the "feel good" assessments teachers write 6. High school students who openly admit that they can't believe they receive a high school diploma for the little work that they have completed

Do not send your high school student here, it is scary. It is a horse and pony show where there is a meeting about everything and a consistent solution for little. Close Quote
