High Schools in Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical

Summary:

Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical is a single-school district in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, serving grades 9–12 with 1,417 students at Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical. Because the district contains only this one high school, school-level and district-level results are the same, so everything below describes both the school and the district.

Academically, the school outperforms the state in every reported MCAS subject. Its biggest strengths are Science, where 52.25% of students were proficient in 2025–2026 versus 40.5% statewide (+11.75 points), and English Language Arts, at 55.78% versus 45.48% (+10.30 points). Biology was 43.6% versus 37.68% (+5.92), while Mathematics was 44.8% versus 43.73% — above the state, but by only +1.07 points, making math the relative weak spot. Completion outcomes are excellent: a 98.6% graduation rate and 0.9% dropout rate in 2024–2025. Class sizes look favorable, with a student-teacher ratio of 11.9, and per-student spending of $22,165 in 2020–2021 (an old, unadjusted figure).

Two trends are worth watching. First, 10th-grade results declined from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026: ELA fell 7.29 points, math 6.77 points, and science 9.61 points. The state also declined, but the school's drops were larger, narrowing its advantage. Second, the ranking slipped from 95th of 349 (73rd percentile, 4 stars) to 117th of 353 (67th percentile, 3 stars) — still the top third of Massachusetts high schools, but off its prior pace. Note that the 2024–2025 Biology figure (57.06%, All Grades) and the 2025–2026 figure (43.6%, End of Course) are different measures and shouldn't be read as a straight year-over-year drop. Free/reduced lunch data was not reported, so economic context can't be assessed.
