Norwell, Massachusetts, a suburban town south of Boston, is home to five schools serving students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12: four schools in the Norwell district (two elementary, one middle, and one high school) plus South Shore Charter Public School, a K–12 charter that operates as its own district. Together they enroll 3,251 students, with 2,194 in the Norwell district schools and 1,057 at the charter.
The Norwell district is one of the strongest in the state, ranked #31 of 351 districts (91st percentile, 5 stars), with all-grade proficiency roughly 25 points above state averages in ELA, math, and science. Norwell High leads the group: a 99.3% graduation rate, 0.0% dropout rate, and 10th-grade proficiency of 82.43% in ELA and 85.14% in math. Norwell Middle School ranks #40 of 478 (92nd percentile) and posts standout 8th-grade civics (71.43%) and 7th-grade math (73.58%). Grace Farrar Cole ranks #82 of 899 and has the highest all-grade science score among the district schools at 71.91%. William G Vinal is the main concern: it slipped from 95th percentile in 2023–2024 to 80th percentile in 2025–2026, with all-grade scores falling between 5 and 10 points and now below district averages — though its 5th grade remains strong, at 78.31% in ELA.
South Shore Charter Public School is a different profile: a 96.2% graduation rate but proficiency below the state in all three subjects (36.59% ELA, 30.43% math, 36.16% science), with the biggest gaps in grade 8 math, 10th-grade science, and Physics.
