Summary

Forest School in Forest, LA, is an alternative school serving 460 students in grades PK through 12 as part of the West Carroll Parish school district, which ranks in the 46th percentile statewide. The school serves a high-poverty community, with 80% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch, and is the only school within 20 miles, making it a central educational hub for the area.

Forest School stands out for its exceptional ability to keep students enrolled and on track to graduate. It has maintained a remarkable 0.0% dropout rate for five consecutive years, far better than the state average of 3.1% to 4.3%, and boasts a high graduation rate of 90.6% compared to the state's 85.0%. However, this success in retention contrasts with significant academic challenges. Proficiency rates in Mathematics (39%), English Language Arts (58%), and Social Studies (30%) are all well below district and state averages, and chronic absenteeism is a major concern at 25.2%, higher than both the district (21.9%) and state (22.5%).

Despite these overall struggles, there are bright spots that show what the school can achieve. For example, 7th graders reached an impressive 89% proficiency in English Language Arts, and Geometry students achieved 100% proficiency in a recent year. These successes, along with a slight downward trend in core subjects and rising absenteeism, suggest the school is highly effective at preventing dropouts but needs to focus on improving daily attendance and translating that into stronger academic performance across all grades and subjects.
