Summary

Pickering Elementary School in Leesville, LA, serves 476 students from Pre-K through 6th grade and is part of the high-performing Vernon Parish school district, which ranks in the 83rd percentile statewide. The school currently holds a 3-star rating and ranks in the 61st percentile, with about 61% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch, reflecting a moderate level of economic diversity in the community.

Pickering Elementary’s strongest area is English Language Arts (ELA), where 78% of students are proficient—matching the district average and exceeding the state average of 70%. This strength has been consistent over the past four years. The school also stands out for its performance with male students, ranking in the 71st percentile for this group and earning 4 stars, which is notably higher than its ranking for female students. Additionally, the student-teacher ratio has improved dramatically to 12.7:1, much lower than nearby schools like Rosepine Elementary (17.2:1) and Anacoco Elementary (14.9:1), suggesting a strong investment in individualized attention. However, the school faces challenges in social studies, where 6th graders scored below the state average, and chronic absenteeism sits at 23.3%, which is slightly above the state average but better than the district average of 31.5%.

Compared to nearby schools, Pickering Elementary is a solid mid-tier option. Anacoco Elementary (15 miles away) is a clear leader with a 5-star rating and higher test scores across the board, while Rosepine Elementary (8 miles away) also outperforms Pickering in most metrics. On the other hand, Pickering performs far better than West Leesville Elementary (7 miles away), which is a 1-star school with high chronic absenteeism and low test scores. For parents, Pickering offers a reliable foundation in literacy, a favorable class size, and effective strategies for engaging male students, though there is room for growth in social studies and addressing attendance concerns to reach the level of its highest-performing peers.

Open Quote We are military and all of my children were able to attend one school together. I loved having them all in one place. The teachers were excellent with answering any questions I ever had. I would recommend PES to incoming families. (Vernon Parish is an open school district, you just have to drive students outside of busing zone). Close Quote
