Summary

Amite High Magnet is a small high school in Amite, LA, serving 347 students in grades 9-12 within the Tangipahoa Parish school district, where a very high percentage of students (88.47%) come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The most critical challenge facing Amite High Magnet is an extraordinarily high chronic absenteeism rate. In the 2024-2025 school year, 52.3% of students were chronically absent—nearly double the district average of 30.5% and more than double the state average. This rate is significantly higher than nearby schools like Kentwood High Magnet School (49.3%) and Jewel M. Sumner High School (48.4%). This attendance crisis is the likely root cause of the school's persistently low academic performance. On LEAP end-of-course exams, proficiency rates are well below district and state averages, with only 25% of students proficient in Geometry and Biology. For comparison, Albany High School in the Livingston Parish district, despite having a similarly high poverty rate (78.65%), is a top-performing school with a chronic absenteeism rate of just 18%, showing that high poverty does not have to dictate low performance.

Despite these challenges, there are some positive signs. The graduation rate has improved from a low of 72.5% in 2021-2022 to 81.6% in 2024-2025, now above the district average. The school has also shown remarkable improvement for its Special Education students, jumping from the bottom 1% in the state to the 34th percentile. Additionally, the student-teacher ratio dropped to a favorable 10.8:1, much lower than nearby Hammond High Magnet School (15.2:1). However, the dropout rate remains high at 4.6%, compared to the state average of 3.1%. For parents, the key takeaway is that while the school has some assets like small class sizes and an improving graduation rate, the severe attendance problem is undermining academic achievement and must be addressed as the top priority.
